Photo guide
How to take the best photo for your dog's portrait: daylight, eye level, both eyes clear. Any phone will do, and we check it before we print.
The photo you send is the most important part of your portrait. A sharp photo taken in daylight at your dog's eye level, with their face and both eyes clear, gives the best likeness. You do not need a good camera: the phone in your pocket is perfect.
Here is what a good photo looks like, and how to fix the four problems we see most often.
Like this
- Face and both eyes clear
- Good daylight, no flash
- Taken at their eye level
- They fill most of the photo
- Any phone is fine
And how to fix the usual problems
-
Blurry
Tap their eyes on the screen to focus, and wait for a still moment.
-
Too dark
Move near a window in daylight. Dark coats need the most light.
-
Looking down
Crouch to their eye level so their face fills out.
-
Too far away
Get close, so their head and shoulders fill the photo.
Only have an older photo? Send us the best one you have. If it is too blurred or dark to give a good result, we tell you when we send your proof, before anything is printed.

Can I use an old photo?
Yes. Send the best one you have. If it is too blurred or dark to give a good result, we tell you when we send your proof, before anything is printed.
Do I need a proper camera?
No. Any modern phone takes a photo that is more than good enough. Daylight and getting down to your dog's eye level matter far more than the camera.
My dog will not sit still. Any tips?
Take a handful of photos in a row and pick the best. Hold a treat or a favourite toy just above your phone to get one alert look at the camera.
Should I crop or edit the photo first?
No need. Send it as it came off your phone, at full size, and we take it from there.
